One of the greatest gifts of this weird internet life has been finding friends in unexpected places. Alex Lacamoire and Ileana Ferreras Lacamoire are exactly that for us. (Yes—that Alex Lacamoire. The Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Award-winning musical genius behind Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, In the Heights, and The Greatest Showman.) We met through music, but we’ve stayed connected through laughter. Having Alex and Ileana in our lives is the kind of friendship you just don’t take for granted. (After all, making friends as adults isn’t easy!)
Beyond being a Broadway genius, Alex is the kindest and happiest human who has taught us about true joy, perseverance, and creating art. This week’s Laugh Lines we got to spend time with both of them and tell more of Alex’s story.
The Joy of Lifting Others
Growing up in Miami, Alex started with a toy piano and eventually a hand-me-down upright that his cousin bought him because she believed so fiercely in his gift. But what makes Alex so extraordinary is that he was born with significant hearing loss.
While there are frequencies he doesn’t hear the same way others do, music has always resonated with him emotionally. Rather than limiting him, it shaped his approach. He’s proof that challenges don’t define us—they can actually give rise to new ways of listening, feeling, and creating. Here are the top 5 things that inspired us during our chat:
- Passion can overcome obstacles.
Born with significant hearing loss, Alex never let it stop him from connecting with music. His story is proof that limitations don’t have to limit your dreams. - Lift others as you rise.
Alex’s wife, Ileana, reminded us that everything he touches “makes all boats rise.” His joy isn’t just in creating—it’s in celebrating and supporting others. Whether he’s conducting a pit orchestra or collaborating with Lin-Manuel Miranda, he makes others shine. - Music is more than sound.
For Alex, music notes carry colors and emotions thanks to synesthesia. It’s a reminder that creativity isn’t one-size-fits-all—sometimes it’s about seeing the world differently. (Watch or listen to the show to hear what colors Alex sees!) - Hard work is behind every standing ovation.
From orchestrating Hamilton to conducting Sweeney Todd, Alex spends hours perfecting every detail. Genius might look effortless on stage, but it’s fueled by persistence and grit. - Joy is contagious.
Whether he’s at a Broadway piano or turning a podcast into a sing-along, Alex brings joy into the room. And joy, like music, is something worth sharing.
Sing-Alongs & Muppet Moments
Of course, it wouldn’t be Laugh Lines without a little chaos. Penn and Alex ended up at the piano together (and maybe turned the whole thing into The Muppet Show.) We adore Alex, and after this episode, we think you will too. And fair warning—you may find yourself humming Rainbow Connection for the rest of the week.
