There are certain life skills, I believe, that our kids need to know in this world. Our kids need to master a solid handshake while making eye contact. They need to know how to cook a meal from start to finish. And, perhaps, most important: Our children need to be able to belt classic 90s song lyrics by heart.
(I can’t have a child who doesn’t know the gospel of TLC and Shania Twain!)
To complete this important part of their education, I have curated a playlist we blast on the way to school and practices. I was very proud of my parenting choices during one car ride when I was belting, “If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends.” PC cut me off to question the intention of the lyrics. I quickly pivoted, “When you are ready to have a girlfriend, it’s important that you take the time to get to know her BFFs.” The car went silent. Luckily, PC grunted out his agreement. I turned Sporty, Ginger, Baby, Posh, and Scary up a little higher.
