The Reason for Your Emotion Rollercoaster

This weekend our kids found out they would not be returning to their class this school year. Lola was especially crushed. I told her it was ok to be upset. It was ok to cry and be angry. We gave her time to process and even let her decide our dinner for the night. We all buried our feelings in a Dominos pizza, and tried our best to cheer each other up.

Change. There is so much change to process right now. In any given moment, I can be feeling anxious, frustrated, accepting, or even weirdly motivated. I ride this rollercoaster of emotions daily, and I found out I am not alone. There is a reason for this and it even has a name.

This is Our First Rodeo

On the podcast, we welcomed back Em Sexton, who is a former Wall Street VP of Communications & Change Management turned successful entrepreneur and owner of The Flourish Market here in North Carolina. Em has been consulting with businesses through this pandemic on change management and how to lead through trauma. She explained to us that The Change Curve is very similar to the stages of grief and it happens anytime we process a major shift.

We’re so used to saying ‘this isn’t my first rodeo’ but this time it is. None of us have experienced a global pandemic, and all the working remotely, homeschooling, and isolation from the outside world is foreign.

In the podcast, Em provides tips for each stage, how to recognize it, and what you can do to help yourself get out of it. It is important to note that these feelings are not linear. You can also ‘regress’ back into different stages as well.

Currently, Em is teaching an online course called ‘Leading Through Corona’ to help middle to upper management during these unprecedented times. If you are a non-profit, a small business owner, or simply cannot pay for the course right now, Em is giving it you for FREE. Learn more here.

If you can pay for the course, $50 from every online course purchased will go to Feeding America, No Kid Hungry, and a local organization called A Place at The Table: https://emsexton.com/leading-through-corona

Hang in there, and happy listening!
