These Opinions Are Wild (And We Love You For Them)

You know those random, slightly unhinged opinions you have that make zero sense to other people — but you will defend them with your whole chest, no matter what? We call that “the hill you’ll die on.” Let’s get my hill out of the way first: People who back into parking spots in crowded lots are selfish. There, I said it. It is my hill and I know some of you will disagree with me.

It all started when I was circling a chaotic Target parking lot (you know the kind — kids crying, carts rolling free, chaos all around) and a giant truck passed up a spot only to reverse into it with a full line of cars behind them, quickly causing a traffic jam. I had to stop, the pedestrians had to stop, the entire parking lot came to a screeching halt while this guy squeezed into a spot I wasn’t sure his truck would fit into. I posted my rant on Instagram and apparently, I’m not alone. (The people have OPINIONS!)

So we asked for more from you and the messages came flooding in. This week on the Laugh Lines podcast, we hear from you standing proudly on your hills, flags waving, shouting your truth into the void, no matter how silly they are.

You Are Delightfully Unhinged

This week’s episode had us laughing about all the hills you will die on. When I say we got hundreds of messages, I am not exaggerating. Some highlights you sent in:

  • Cereal is soup. (You chaotic legend.)
  • You should always put two spaces after a period. (Heck yeah, Gen X!)
  • Pineapple belongs on pizza. (I feel like you’re just starting a fight.)
  • Audio books don’t count as reading. (Producer Sam was ready to fight someone.)

We even waded into Berenstain vs. Berenstein Bears territory, which is a huge “Mandela Effect” for some people (including me) on which pronunciation is correct. However, we made a phone call to my Mom during the show and she had a different opinion.

What’s Your Hill?

While most of the episode was a love letter to irrational hills, we couldn’t resist a few unexpected detours. Penn turned his love Top Gun: Maverick into a full-blown TED Talk. We learned real-life college Quidditch involves chasing a tennis ball hanging out of someone’s shorts. (The photos are NSFW.) And we auditioned new… national anthems? More on that in the show.

Whether your hill is about sidewalk protocol or the Oxford comma, you are welcome here. This episode is a chaotic, joyful ode to petty opinions that bring us together and make us laugh. Listen and tell us if we missed yours!
