Any parent with school-aged children can tell you how crazy the month of May is. Just like the month of December, the calendar is packed with activities, gatherings, and ceremonies. Except no presents, cookies, or twinkling lights.
So we call it: Maycember.
This week, I needed to a pick-me-up knowing we were headed into a crazy month. I was talking to a friend and she had the best advice for this crazy time: “In 20 years, you will wish to be in this space, with these problems, this chaos, this body. Try to find the beauty in it.”
It’s hard to believe, but in 20 years I will probably miss Maycember. (I mean, in 20 years I hope to be on a beach .. so maybe not this exact space — BUT I get it.) These are the days. It was so helpful for me to hear it.
Your Great Advice
I figured if I was feeling like I needed a pick-me-up, maybe you did too. So I asked all of you on Instagram: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? And let me tell you, we got some good ones.
One that really stuck out to me: Motion before motivation. If you wait until you are motivated you will never move. When I was standing on that ledge getting ready to bungee jump over 700 feet on The Amazing Race, the sweet man who was harnessing me said: “If you wait until you’re ready, you’ll never go.” Sometimes you just have to jump.
Penn and I talk about all our favorite submissions on the podcast, but here are a few fun ones that didn’t make the show:
Take a vacation and don’t feel guilty.
Growth isn’t always a ladder, it can be more of a jungle gym.
People can only love you in the way they know how to and in the capacity they have.
There is a season for everything. Embrace but don’t hang on.
If it’s not going to matter in 5 years, don’t spend more than 5 minutes on it.
Don’t take criticism from people you wouldn’t take advice from.
Nothing good happens after 2am. Just go to bed. (Ummmm nothing good happens after 9:30… or is that just me?)
Hear all the advice on our podcast and tell us what we missed!
