This one made me a mom 14 years ago on this very day. When she was born she didn’t cry. I looked at her face and she just stared at me. We had a sweet moment, but doctors get a little worried when babies don’t move or make noise. They took her from my arms and different nurses and new doctors came running in. There were devices and codes and beeps. She was breathing but just so still ... just staring at them. As a first time parent I was taking loud, deep breaths between sobs, willing her to gasp and cry. Finally, as if she rolled her eyes and said, “okay ... fine” she let out a squeak. Then a cry. Then a wail.
That’s my Lola. She takes her time. At first, she’s quiet as she reads the situation and the people in it. But mother of all things Holy does she know how to use her voice! It’s widely known she’s the funny one in our family. She’s incredibly empathetic and empties her allowance for anyone in need. She’s got big goals for her life and is so utterly determined. Lola, I want to be like you when I grow up. I’m so lucky to be your mama. I can’t wait to see where this year takes you. Happy Birthday, Lola Zelle. ❤️
PS: Thanks for being so cool about not having a party. Also, how am I old enough to have a 14 year old?

With a laugh, Penn pointed out that I had been in the same sweatpants for three days. I have no regrets — but I also thought it was time to throw on some makeup, a dress, and have a “date night” driving to pickup takeout. We took the long way home and it felt almost normal. But now that I’ve been in a bra and real shoes for an hour ... I’m over it! How will we re-enter society when real clothes seem IMPOSSIBLE? Happy weekend, friends.
